About Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's oldest and largest protected area, bisected by the Victoria Nile as it makes its dramatic journey from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert. The centrepiece is the thundering Murchison Falls itself, where the entire force of the Nile is squeezed through a narrow 7-meter rocky gap before plunging 43 meters into the "Devil's Cauldron" below. The park is divided by the river into two distinct habitats. The northern bank is classic savannah — rolling grasslands with giraffes, lions, elephants, buffaloes, and Uganda kobs. The southern bank is thick woodland, home to chimpanzees and forest birds. A boat cruise from the delta to the base of the falls is one of East Africa's most spectacular experiences, with crocodiles, hippos, and African Fish Eagles lining the banks. Murchison Falls is often combined with a visit to Budongo Forest for chimpanzee tracking and the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino encounters.
