Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, a vast freshwater body nestled between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, ringed by green mountains and dotted with islands. Unlike many African lakes, Kivu is bilharzia-free, making it safe for swimming, kayaking, and water sports. The lakeside towns of Gisenyi (Rubavu) in the north and Kibuye (Karongi) in the centre offer charming beach retreats with boutique lodges, waterfront restaurants, and a laid-back pace that feels a world away from the safari circuit. Island-hopping by traditional wooden boat or kayak — visiting Napoleon Island's bat colonies or the fishermen of Amahoro Island — is a highlight. The scenic drive along Kivu's western shore, winding through terraced hillsides and fishing villages, is considered one of the most beautiful road journeys in Africa. Lake Kivu is the ideal 2-3 day wind-down after gorilla trekking or Nyungwe chimpanzee tracking.
