About Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of the oldest and most biodiverse rainforests in Africa — a 1,000-square-kilometer expanse of montane forest that has survived since the last Ice Age. The forest is home to 13 primate species, including habituated chimpanzee groups that can be tracked on foot through the misty undergrowth. The park's signature experience is the Canopy Walkway — a 200-meter suspension bridge hung 50 meters above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views across the treetops and into the Nyungwe valley. It is the only canopy walk of its kind in East Africa. Beyond primates, Nyungwe harbours over 300 bird species (many endemic to the Albertine Rift), 75 mammal species, and an extraordinary diversity of orchids, butterflies, and tree ferns. The Gisakura Tea Plantation on the park's edge adds a scenic cultural stop.
